2016 December 14

Lipstick Disco’s 2016 Christmas musical advent calendar – we’ll be bringing a daily dose throughout December of 24 kick-ass women, who’ve been making and playing kick-ass music in 2016.

Honey Dijon is a name I’ve heard celebrated for quite some time, as well as being an exceptional DJ and producer, as an openly Trans Black woman, she’s also a incredible role model for both the Trans community and women of colour, promoting diversity and equality in the music industry and beyond. I hadn’t managed to catch one of her sets before – until this Summer, when I witnessed her smash the shutters off Panorama bar with what was undoubtedly for me for best DJ set I experienced this year. Honey weaves through genres seamlessly and at times during her set, I felt so excited I literally thought was going to combust, then just when you think it can’t get any better, she elevates you that little bit more and then just keeps on giving. I’ve seen her several times since then and each the same story, it’s no wonder Mixmag announced her as no 11 in their top 20 DJ’s of 2016, published just yesterday.

Honey has had an exceptional 2016 – a full diary of gigs, both at home in the US, across the pond in Europe and even taking in an Australian tour for December. With regular appearances alongside her mentor and sidekick Derrick Carter, guest appearances on The Black Madonna’s US tour and Heidi’s XOYO residency, and regular sets at Berlin’s Panorama bar, demonstrating how sought-after and in-demand she is. Honey provided mixes for Mixmag, I-D Mag, Defected In The House and Heidi’s radio 1 show this year.

Release wise, in October she buddied up with Seven Davis Junior, for ‘Houze’ EP on Classic Music Company and she created a collaborative remix with Argy for Freaks’ – ‘He’s Angry‘. Honey also teamed up with Argy for their own release ‘Just Fierce’ released on These Days back in Feb – a homage to the NYC ballroom scene, with tinges of Acid and a title which quite aptly describes the lady herself, so it seems fitting we should bring you this track for todays advent.
