2016 December 17

Lipstick Disco’s 2016 Christmas musical advent calendar – we’ll be bringing a daily dose throughout December of 24 kick-ass women, who’ve been making and playing kick-ass music in 2016.

Chicago born / London based Kate Simko, is No. 17 of our advent today. Kate has been massively pushing the boundaries of Electronic Dance Music in 2016, with exciting and innovative results. For more than a decade Kate has been making waves with her unique flavoured house music, inspired by her home town of Chicago, but this year the classically trained Pianist really went back to her classical routes, with a continuation and development of her incredible genre-bending project The ‘London Electronic Orchestra’ culminating in a full album and Live orchestral performances thereof.

The self-titled album ‘Kate Simko and London Electronic Orchestra’ was released in May on The Vinyl Factory, and comprises of an 11 track album, composed by Kate and realised by her seven piece all-female string ensemble, which delicately blends Kate‘s classical training with her passion for electronic music. Succulent strings, delicately swathed by by swirling synths and synthetic beats, create this intimate and innovative marriage of classical and contemporary. While Kate has been performing live with her ensemble since 2014, debuting at The Britten Theatre at The Royal College of Music, and going on to perform at The Roundhouse for iTunes festival, LEAF Festival, Latitude, Boiler Room in Ibiza, Bestival, Shoreditch House and more, this year saw a monumental debut with The London Electronic Orchestra at the highly prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

As well as the LEO project, Kate also continues her work solo as a DJ and this year a solid schedule of gigs have seen her play at venues across the globe, from sets at; The BPM festival Mexico, Kater Blau in Berlin, DC-10 in Ibiza, Output in NYC + many more, as well as London’s seminal Fabric club, who she very vocally supported after their closure this year, and produced a track to help with the savefabric campaign, which you can listen to HERE:

For todays advent song, we wanted to bring you one of Kates tracks with The London Electronic Orchestra, and we chose Kate’s Dub version of ‘Waiting For Games’ which comes from a more recent EP of dance floor versions of the album track. Listen to the Full EP HERE, and make sure you check out the album HERE.
