Christian Löffler – Lost EP

2015 November 30

Christian Löffler is one of those producers who have managed to carve himself a very distinct sound -you hear one of his tracks, and there is no mistaking it is him. When you need dark, mellow, chilled electronica, something “melancholic but at the some time euphoric” in his words, it is him that you go to. He refuses to conform to either the club or the headphones, bridging dance music with sounds that are more classical and organic.

After his brilliant sophomore LP Young Alaska was released last year on his own label Ki, the German producer offered York via 20/20Vision this year. It was yet another proof of his abilities to create highly emotive, textural, intelligent and timeless piece of music. While I was expecting a new full length in 2016, he surprised with a two track and two remix EP on Hunter/Game’s new label Just This.

The EP opens with the title track Lost, which sees Löffler use a filtered bass sound that he usually steers clear of, while putting beautiful glacial synths at center stage accompanied with layers and textures of sounds and cinematic pads. The track is a captivating listen as everything else he produces, while slightly feeling like a reinterpretation of Holden’s brilliant remix of Nathan Fake’s The Sky Was Pink.

The second original titled Unknown is a more relaxed affair, flowing airily with a subby bass and glitchy soundscapes, before resurrecting itself as Interpol’s PDA.

Remix duties are fulfilled by Lake People and Nuno Dos Santos, who both throw the originals in a sea of techno for a more aggressive listen.

This is a beautiful EP that you should definitely put in your collection, packed with details that made you love Löffler in the first place. Out digitally on December 11 with vinyl coming in February.
