Review – Heidi Jackathon at Sonar

2015 July 2

So we’re already full swing into festival season and just last week I returned (and am still recovering) from a weeks partying in Barcelona for Sonar. It’s a musical mecca I’ve partaken in for what’s just been my fifth year in a row and I assure you it won’t be my last. The festival itself is undoubtedly one of the biggest and best electronic music festivals in the world, but it’s not just the festival alone that gets the city buzzing, it’s a whole heap of ‘off Sonar’ parties that throb and thrive during Sonar week, that make Barcelona a hub to club-goers from Europe and beyond.

One such party, which always takes place on the Thursday night of Sonar week (Official Sonar only takes place Thurs day + Friday Day & Night) is Heidi’s Jackathon party, which is an absolute must for any house music lovers descending on the city during Sonar week. Heidi’s Jackathon parties, wherever they are in the world, always massively go off; I’ve been to a few and each and every time, I’ve walked away musically mind-blown, wondering if I’ll ever top it, this one was no exception. This is my third Sonar Jackathon, each and every year Heidi hand-picks pretty much all of my favorite DJ’s and throws one fuck-off party with them all gracing the decks; the likes of Detroit Swindle, Waze & Odyssey, Bicep, George Fitzgerald, Citizenn, Ejeca pretty much all my top picks have been guests previous years. This year, she had Kim Ann Foxman return, Krankbrother, and legends Derrick Carter and Carl Craig while she took on a bk2bk with Tom Trago, absolute dream line-up.

The venue changes yearly and this time the setting was Razzmatazz, arguably Barcelona’s most renowned and prestigious nighclub. I was lucky enough to be invited to the pre-drinks on the roof terrace, sipping on beers while Krankbrother laid some soulful vibes, to watch the sun go down. Meanwhile downstairs, Kim Ann Foxman stepped-up in the main room, while the venue began to fill with excited party-goers, smashing out a set of solid, Acid house grooves to warm the crowd; I’ve seen Kim play a few times and this was undoubtedly the best set I’ve heard her deliver, bang on point. Next up, Chicago legend Derrick Carter came to the decks, laying down (in my opinion) the best set of the evening; relentless, pumping, hi-NRG hands-in-the-air, no-nonsence, banging, Chicago House, so.damn.good!! Making way for the No1 girl herself, Heidi who together with Tom Trago, tore the roof off the venue with a set of heavy, Deep-Tech House grooves. Finally Detroit Techno God Carl Craig absolutely ripped his way through the closing set of the night, firmly cementing his status as one of the worlds leading Techno DJ’s.

This was a Epic musical journey of mind-blowing proportions, impossible to top i’m sure (until the next Jackathon anyway) and for those of you who missed out, Heidi put together a pre-mix of Carl Craigs best remixes prior to the party, check it.
