Sonar

So unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll know it’s Sonar weekend in Barcelona. I’m here, ready to party at one of the worlds most prestigious electronic music festivals in the world. It’s my fourth year in a row and has become my yearly musical mecca; but what makes Sonar so special? Is it the effortlessly cool city it’s set in? or the guaranteed sunshine? Maybe the crowd of discerning educated music lovers? The vast, uber cool open venues it’s held in (both day and night) that don’t require trekking 15 miles from one tent to the next in a muddy field? or the fact that it’s spitting distance from the beach. In fact it’s all of the above, plus of course most importantly it’s the undeniably top-notch programming and diversity of line-up that set’s this apart from all the other festival; from veteran legends such as Kraftwerk and Chemical Brothers, hipster hype kids such as FKA Twigs and Zebra Katz, world class credible DJ’s such as Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones and exciting live acts such as Hot Chip and Die Antword. What pleases me most about Sonar’s line-up, is there constant support for the female artists, so many festivals particularly the electronic ones, still continue to have very male dominated line-ups and although it’s not a 50/50 split, Sonar certainly represents the women.

This year the ladies on the line-up include:

Die Antwoord, FKA TwigsRóisín Murphy, Maya Jane Coles, Annie Mac, LCC, Holly Herndon, Kate Tempest, XosarCaboSanRoque, Desert DJ’s, Helena Hauff, Klara Lewis, Courtesy, Bosaina, NV, Brigit Laverne, Valesuchi, Adda Kaleh, and Ah! Kosmos.  That’s an impressive billing for the girls.

For those of you who aren’t here, fear not, Sonar have organised a number of live streaming sessions. Culturebox will be video streaming more than 35 concerts from Sonar. Check the programme HERE

Icat radio will also be streaming some of the best concerts and sets, chech HERE for more details.

and Redbull Music Academy are streaming the whole weekend of their stage HERE

Now for those of you who are in Barcelona today, you’ll know Sonar by night doesn’t happen Thursdays, so what’s one to do? Here’s a couple of parties we recommend.

Firstly Heidi’s Jackathon tonight at Razzmatazz. Without shadow of doubt, Heidi is my no1 favourite DJ, she always knows how to bring it home and her Jackathon parties are second to none. This will be my third year in a row, at the Off Sonar Thursday night Jackathon Sioree and I know I’m in for a killer treat. Kranbrother, Kim Ann Foxman, Tom Trago b2b with Heidi, Carl Craig and Derrick Carter BIG line-up. Here’s the details FACEBOOK EVENT / CLUB EVENT

And next up, for those of you kick starting a little earlier, the Resident Advisor party at, El Monasterio of El Poble Espanyol which includes, Andy Stott (live) Erol AlkanJackmaster b2b Gerd JansonFelicitaLeon Vynehall, and I-F Here’s the event details on RA: http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?669023

Now please excuse me while I go off and have fun.
